VERDICT While this novel has its annoyances (e.g., the protagonist’s cinnamon roll obsession grows old fast, and she comes off preachy at times), it redeems itself with genuine surprises, depictions of love, and fitting conclusions to both plotlines. Narrator Julia Whelan brings passion to the two different lives of Hannah Martin, with the alternating storylines demarcated by thoughtful pauses. Her life’s journey diverges on a night when leaving a club early provides the timing that causes her to get hit by a car. A number of aspects of each life are remarkably similar though; chief among them is Hannah’s friendship with Gaby, her rock in each life, both of which are marked by difficult events.
